Project history: A shelterwood seed-step harvest (all but 12 trees/acre removed) was done in 1997. Logging residue was piled and burned in Fall, 1997. Sugar pine, Douglas-fir, incense cedar, ponderosa pine, and giant sequoia seedlings were planted within, on the edges, and outside of areas with burn pile residue. Sugar pines are replicated across 100 plots; the other species are replicated 50 times each.
Research questions: What is the relative performance (survival and growth) of species regenerating beneath a partial overstory? What effect does proximity to burn pile have on performance? How does the effect of burn pile proximity on non-tree density influence the seedling performance?
